So as to keep Dodger Thoughts free of "Dump Karl Dorrell" talk in the midst of a JD Drew crisis, I have this thread for people wishing to discuss today's doings on the gridiron.
I am awaiting Tommy Tuberville's announcement that Auburn STILL deserves a spot in the BCS championship game despite losing at home by 22 points to an unranked team.
Bob, did you see the article that Easterbrook (I know, gasp) wrote on not punting? It's really from a professor at Cal, but it's very interesting. There's a link to the paper within the article.
Auburn QB Brandon Cox not throwing as well as usual, completes 3 of 8 first half passes to Georgia DB Tra Battle. Georgia, 30-7 at the half, pretty total domination all game.
So much for one of the "one-loss teams still with a shot at the national title," as referred to by some pundits..
I'd like to call for all holders of a Blue Shield medical plan to cancel it, immediately. Switch to something else. The genital-obsessed disembodied head commercials have to be stopped, and the only way to do it is to bankrupt the company.
This has been your consumer alert with Andrew Shimmin. Thank you for your time.
My first year there we went to the Sun Bowl (Arizona/ASU were still in the WAC in 1968). They were reasonably good while Dick Tomey coached them, but they've fallen off a cliff since then.
37 Yeah, I was just kidding. Arizona is a fine school.
I just really like the old PCC, with its eight teams. I'm not a big fan of the Arizona schools being in the Pac-10. I'd rather have San Diego St. and Cal Poly in the conference.
37
Sorry, this just isn't a very good UofA team. They should have been better building on their strong finish last year, but they haven't. The Wildcats show the organization and offensive skills of UCLA.
DeSean Jackson has four punt returns for TDs this year, which puts him one short of the NCAA record in a season, held by Chad Owens of UH back in 2004.
41 The Bows/Warriors play OSU in a couple of weeks, so they're unlikely to be invited back to the Hawaii Bowl. The Advertiser polled its readers and UCLA was the preferred choice of opponent for that game on Christmas Eve, assuming it wins enough to qualify as the 6th best team in the Pac-10.
I shouldn't gripe; the previous conference the bowl had a partnership with was Conference-USA, which gave us Houston and Tulane, teams nobody here gave a lick about.
Stanford running back Emeka Nnoli in the media guide says that the one thing he would change about college foootball is that the players should be paid.
Bob, I was thinking about something you said the other day about "Not believing that the Bruins would play in a BCS game in your lifetime..." or something to that effect.
You were just talking about the title game, right? Because if we don't go to another Rose Bowl game again, I'll just cry.
If Arizona hangs on, this doesn't change the Pac-10 race all that much. Cal still needed to win next week. And I doubt Cal would ever have made it into the top 2 in the BCS with an 11-1 record.
Homer Smith has a list of common misconceptions about football:
Misconception #8
by Homer Smith April 8, 2002
Time of possession is a factor.
How can it be? The clock stops when a pass falls incomplete. It keeps moving when a run is stopped for no gain. Both results are zero yardage, yet, the pass kept the ball for five seconds while the run kept it for 40.
If a team that passed only but never completed a pass played a team that ran only but never made a firstdown, the result would be a tie and both defenses would have been on the field for the same number of real minutes. Yet, if both teams ran the same number of plays, one would have a possession time of eight times that of the other.
Time of possession is meaningless. It has nothing to do with keeping your defense or their offense off the field. It has nothing to do with anything meaningful. It is for writers and readers who feel precise when a 36:07 is compared to a 23:53.
Andre Ware of ABC has declared that he is tired of "the claim of SEC supremacy." He doesn't believe any of the coaches there claiming that they have to be in the BCS title game because they are in the SEC.
This was the first game that UCLA scored 25 points since the opening game of the 1994 season. The Bruins beat Tennessee 25-23. That game featured both Todd Helton and Peyton Manning.
I was going to take it easy tonight and watch the USC/Oregon game, but now I just found out that they aren't showing the game up here in the bay area (it's being broadcast on FSN +, a channel that comcast made available only to their digital subscribers this year). I really wanted to see this game!
Wow, Stanford won a football game today. I'm completely shocked.
Oh, and Jon (and Bob), you can always listen to Stanford games for free directly on the KZSU web site. It's the only college I know of that is smart enough to do this with their college radio station.
The first football game I ever listened to was USC-Notre Dame in 1964. Notre Dame was undefeated and ranked number 1. They had a 17-0 lead at half and SC game back to win 20-17. I was hooked.
OK, before it goes any further, I made up the George Gipp story.
But I was taught when I was a wee lad that John McKay was a good Catholic and Ara Parseghian just worked for a Catholic school and I should root for USC in that situation.
So Mom sayeth. So I have maintained that stance ever since.
The greatest college football coaches according to my mom were John McKay and Homer Smith.
You forget that one of the biggest frustrations for UCLA fans is that USC fans don't care much at all about basketball, so you can't gloat about that. Most USC fans just ignore the Wooden Era.
And USC alums have about as much sense of the school's basketball history as UCLA fans do about the school's football history.
14-3 in the 3rd quarter? Are the Ducks this good or is SC overrated?
And I just remembered the next day is Christmas Day, so you'll have to bring gifts. There are six people who're usually here that morning, and we always have about six gifts apiece, so keep that in mind.
Heh. I just got a Flash e-mail from the UofA Alumni Association:
Homecoming 2006
Arizona Defeats No. 8 California 24-20
For the second consecutive year, Arizona has taken advantage of a strong alumni presence at Homecoming and defeated a top-10 team! After last year's memorable Homecoming victory over then-No. 7 ranked UCLA by a score of 52-14, Arizona Football has pulled off another dramatic victory! Despite being down 17-3 to start the second half, the Wildcats battled to defeat the Golden Bears 24-20. The Wildcats are now one win away from becoming bowl-eligible for the first time since the 1998 season and have two games remaining to make that happen, including a November 25 showdown against rival Arizona State!
I'm not entirely sure how the alumni's presence helped the team win, but never mind.
Dump Karl Dorrell.
Arizona has already learned that it's a bad idea to punt the ball to Desean Jackson.
That's uncanny humor from a ten year old.
Some Pac-10 teams still have good ones, namely USC and UCLA. Stanford has uniforms that aren't nearly as good as the team.
I firmly believe that.
Of course, It seemed like Carson Palmer was at USC for a decade. Same with Steve Stenstrom at Stanford.
And that was the case since he played in parts of six seasons.
Stanford has 3.
I wish we got guys like that...Instead, we get Junior Taylor and Chris Markey.
That's tumorous growth, not improvement growth.

What qualifies someone to be a pundit, anyhow?
This has been your consumer alert with Andrew Shimmin. Thank you for your time.
Boy, that's saying something. What's wrong with Stanford's uniforms?
We know, Helen...We know.
I phrased that wrong. I meant that Stanford has nice uniforms, but a bad team.
My first year there we went to the Sun Bowl (Arizona/ASU were still in the WAC in 1968). They were reasonably good while Dick Tomey coached them, but they've fallen off a cliff since then.
You can slam ASU as much as you like.
I just really like the old PCC, with its eight teams. I'm not a big fan of the Arizona schools being in the Pac-10. I'd rather have San Diego St. and Cal Poly in the conference.

Now, lemme tell you about UH this year...
Where they will be slaughtered.
I shouldn't gripe; the previous conference the bowl had a partnership with was Conference-USA, which gave us Houston and Tulane, teams nobody here gave a lick about.
It came on an interception return. Still, only one offensive touchdown in something like the past six games.
Can Ted Robinson make the Cardinal sound good this year?
Stanford defensive yardage: 49
His most prized possession is a Frank Thomas baseball card.
Alex Lopez's little brother has 14 points in his first game.
Stanford 81 yards offense
Washington 64 yards offense
We just about doubled our game yardage on one play.
Album: Soft Machine
Thanks
Let's get out there and show improvement!
I gave my ticket to my friend for this game because he wanted to take his son to a game. I thought I would have to be working today anyway.
You were just talking about the title game, right? Because if we don't go to another Rose Bowl game again, I'll just cry.
I wouldn't be surprised if UCLA went to the Rose Bowl (January 1 variety) in the next five years.
BCS title game.
Nope.
Duke and Florida International.
They are the only winless Division 1-A football teams left.
Stanford 20
Washington 3
Good lord.
Sorry, Vishal. Hold out hope.
One of those events is easier than the other.
UCLA kicks field goal
NEWS ALERT
SC must feel so small after that loss.
Kidding. Congrats on the win, Jon. Good for Stanford.
Huskies 46
Panthers 45
A Devil Rays-Royals game.
Uh, it's going to be bad.
Real bad.
UCLA calls timeout because play wasn't in on time.
NEWS ALERT
Which would be nice, if he didn't stink.
Woohoo, it's Medlock time!
{puts paper bag over head}
Your head has to look pretty, after all.
At San Jose State...
Boise State trails SJSU 7-6 and scores a TD early in the third to go up 12-7. The Broncos go for 2 and don't get it.
The Spartans drive down the field and score a TD to lead 13-12 and go for 2. They don't get it either.
That may be good for my friend with his 6ish year old son with him.
And they're ahead!
Or so I've heard from fans of other teams.
I'm guessing that not a lot of people are tuning into that one tonight.
It's 7-7 in Manhattan.
The view from the end zone is not a good one. There's a reason why those seats cost less.
Not going to happen.
Of course, I don't know if Homer Smith is still alive.
Dad wants Homer Smith back.
You can guess who has not read that book.

Be still my heart.
I think the Beavers may have been lulled to sleep by the sluggish Rose Bowl crowd.
They play 1-8 Utah State and then at 6-3 Nevada on 11/25 to finish up.
I don't know who was favored in the Wazzu-ASU game. I'm certain that USC is favored at home over Oregon.
Phenomenal would not be one of those ways.
Fortuitous?
Mooreesque?
Mooreesque works.
Nice.
I'll take self delusion for 500, Alex.
Exciting stuff here.
Nice career.
Who knew?
Quack Quack!
K State is up 35-21 on Texas.
USC's march to Glendale continues.
Against anybody.
Ever.
It is part of my core beliefs. It's in my DNA. It's probably in the RNA too.
Apparently, Bob Timmermann does not read all the appropriate Papal Bulls.
Wow.
I'll root for Boston College instead if you think I should root for a Catholic big time college football team.
There are more choices in basketball.
I root very, very, very, very hard for USC to beat Notre Dame every year.
USC's 55-24 win over Notre Dame back in 1974(?) was one of the happpiest days of my childhood.
I'm supposed to hate Notre Dame, but I don't. I guess it's because I think college football is more interesting when Notre Dame is good.
I think it's akin to people thinking that this year's World Series wasn't worthy of consideration because the Yankees and/or Mets weren't in it.
That's JoeyP style thinking.
I enjoy when the LSU's and the Washington's of the world make a run at a title, but Notre Dame being bad is not something I enjoy.
Oh, and Jon (and Bob), you can always listen to Stanford games for free directly on the KZSU web site. It's the only college I know of that is smart enough to do this with their college radio station.
One of mine too, though I was 18.
I think SC is going to lose tonight.
Yay!
Or not.
It's quite impressive, actually.
OK, before it goes any further, I made up the George Gipp story.
But I was taught when I was a wee lad that John McKay was a good Catholic and Ara Parseghian just worked for a Catholic school and I should root for USC in that situation.

*May not have actually happened.
And USC alums have about as much sense of the school's basketball history as UCLA fans do about the school's football history.
I'm sure Paul Westphal remembers.
USC basketball almost does not exist.
However they haven't been in the Final Four since 1954.
Greg Brock does not double post.
If you mean crashing on the sofas, we could probably do that too, assuming there are no more than about five people coming to the game.
But Oregon likes to reciprocate.
And I just remembered the next day is Christmas Day, so you'll have to bring gifts. There are six people who're usually here that morning, and we always have about six gifts apiece, so keep that in mind.
I doubt UCLA will be able to beat ASU next week. The Bruins haven't won a road game all year.
The score is relatively low because both Oregon and USC had fairly long drives in the first quarter that ended up with no points.

And the 'Cats got very, very, very lucky today. They are not a good team.
And not many of the games were exciting either
The writers must have hated that game. All the stories in the paper tomorrow will be quite short.
USC is back on the road to Glendale.
