The National Baseball Hall of Fame announced 10 finalists for this year's Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasters.
The living candidates are: Dave Niehaus (he plans to get out the rye bread if he is chosen), Joe Nuxhall (he plans to sound even more homespun if chosen), Tony Kubek (he will be workmanlike and not upstage anyone if chosen), Denny Matthews (he will remind people that they do play major league baseball in Kansas City), Ken Harrelson (his acceptance speech would certainly be loud and self-serving and would drown out the mass suicides).
Also there are broadcasters who have passed on who are finalists: Bill King, Tom Cheek, France Laux, Dizzy Dean, and Graham McNamee.
Bill King and Denny Matthews are the class of this bunch, I think.
Really, both the Frick and Spink awards have lost any meaning, because the need to give it out every year (and the need to artificially limit the candidate pool) has resulted in a lot of mediocre winners.
If Hawk Harrelson wins, they should just blow up the whole thing and start over. That guy is the worst announcer of all time with the possible exception of Rick Monday. It would be like inducting Mario Mendoza into the Hall of Fame.

My mind cannot wrap itself around the possible implications here.
The way the voting has gone for other awards this year, the Hawk will win.
Who really gives a Frick?
You hear that guys? I'm coming for you.
