Former big leaguer and current Long Island Duck Jose Offerman was arrested last night after he attacked Bridgeport pitcher Matt Beech and catcher John Nathans with his bat after getting hit by a pitch.
1 If the police are involved, it is outside of the game, wouldn't you say?
Oh, Jose, Jose... You need some Canadian teammates to demonstrate proper hockey-fighting technique, which always begins with throwing gloves, stick, and pads to the ground. In fact, the hostility of the throwing of said items is part of the bluster and sends the message, too.
For some perspective on the level of desperation that may or may not have fed into Offerman's apparently criminal rampage, here's a link to a good article on the Ducks from a few weeks ago:
2 I've always thought the idea of intentionally throwing at people stupid. If the case was that Beech threw at him to "send a message," then he should not be suprised if Offerman responds. Granted, an assault with a bat may not have been the response Beech was expecting, but that's the chance he took.
3 Ed Yarnall should start Friday for the Dodgers. Edgardo Alfonzo will start at 3B for LA the same day after Shea Hillenbrand is DFA after asking Mark Sweeney to compare and contrast sinking ships.
