Boston rookie Clay Buchholz, making only his second major league appearance and only because Tim Wakefield was injured, threw a no-hitter against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park. The Red Sox won the game 10-0. The last pitcher to throw a no-hitter in his second start was Wilson Alvarez of the White Sox back in 1991.
The last Red Sox pitcher to have thrown a no-hitter was Derek Lowe on April 27, 2002 at Fenway against Tampa Bay. That was also a 10-0 win.
As I left work, I was pondering Bob's reference to "May you live in interesting times in Boston" in the DT game thread. So I arrive at my favorite watering hole near the Boston Garden to see everyone on their feet as Clay Buchholz' final pitch is called a strike. As the bar erupts in joy, everything suddenly makes sense.
Just a quick editorial question - the note says the last Red Sox no hitter was Derek Lowe in 2002, but the last time the Orioles were no hit was by the Sox last year...doesn't that mean the last Red Sox no hitter was last year?
Last year's "no-hitter" didn't officially count: it was a 5 inning no-hitter by Devern Hansack that was cut short by rain on the last day of the season. So the last official no-hitter before Buchholz was D.Lowe, but Hansack did have those 5 innings against the Orioles.
