Lofton headed for the other Ohio team?
2008-02-11 22:10
by Bob Timmermann

MLB.com and FoxSports are both reporting that the Reds are considering a deal to sign free agent outfielder Kenny Lofton.

If Lofton signs with Cincinnati, that means he would be on his 13th 12th different team and his 10th different team since the start of the 2002 season. Lofton has already played for at least two teams in each of the three NL divisions, but he's only played for more than one team in one AL division, the Central with Cleveland and Chicago.

Lofton has played for Reds manager Dusty Baker in both San Francisco and Chicago (NL version).

Perfect for Dusty? A proven veteran leader who doesn't clog the bases.

Bob, I only count 12 teams for Lofton, including the Reds:

1) Houston
2) Cleveland (3 times)
3) Atlanta
4) White Sox
5) San Francisco
6) Pittsburgh
7) Cubs
8) Yankees
9) Philadelphia
10) Dodgers
11) Texas
12) Cincinnati

I also blame Billy Joel. Untalented hack.

Well I went back to Ohio
But my teammates were gone.
I stood in the dugout;
There was no one I knew.
I was stunned and amazed.
My rookie memories
Slowly swirled past
Like the wind through the trees.
Hey, oh, oh way to go Ohio.

4 I never understood the Billy Joel popularity; must be a New York state of mind thing. I always thought he was awfully derivative without adding much of interest. On the plus side, he was married to Christie Brinkley.

There seems to be a strong anti Billy Joel sentiment growing in America, or at least among sports fans.

Sunday, Joe Posnanski bashed Joel on his blog. Then, Bob lashes out on The Griddle. And even Deadspin's Will Leitch had some anti-Joel comments in his book, "God Save The Fan", which I'm reading now.

I still really like "The Stranger", plus maybe about 10 other Billy Joel songs.
