Day 1 of Olympic qualifying
2008-03-07 12:11
by Bob Timmermann

Korea, Canada, Australia, and Taiwan all won their opening games in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Taiwan.

  • Korea shut out South Africa, 5-0. Three pitchers combined on a 2-hitter for Korea.
  • Canada survived an 8-run third inning by Mexico and won 15-10.
  • Australia defeated Germany, 4-1.
  • Taiwan was able to use the mercy rule to beat Spain in 7 innings, 13-3.

The top three teams from the round robin event will advance to the Olympic tournament in Beijing this summer. Already qualified for that tournament are the USA, China, Cuba, Netherlands, and Japan.

Is there a tournament below the Olympic Qualifying Tournament? Who qualifies the qualifiers?

Different sport, but I knew a guy who played on the South African national hockey team. They played in D pool, against powerhouses like Luxembourg and Yemen.

If you don't make it through regional qualifying as the US, Cuba, Japan, and Netherlands did (China is the host), then the next best teams go in to one big pot.

if i understand correctly, there was a first round for Asia / North America / Eupore. the first place teams of that tournement qualifed ( i'd assume htat it's the US, Netherland and I'm totally positive that Japan won the Asian round)

Cuba probably qualifed by being the first place team last time around (that or they played in the same qualifier as Austrialia and South Africa and won that), China for being the host nation (they suck at baseball)

the 2nd and 3rd place finish in those rounds enter this round of qualifier... which is kinda why i call it the wildcard round.

anyway. the Spain's catcher is Dinonr Navvaro.....'s older brother.

the biggest implication game right now is Mexico vs Taiwan, two team seen as possible contenders (Africa / Spain / Germany is not )

host team Taiwan is making the most of their home town advantage so far... they're leading Mexico 4-0 after 4innings

Mexico had a slugfest yesterday so their pitching staff is probably quiet burned.

I believe North and South America were guaranteed two spots from its tournament. That's why the US and Cuba both made it.

It would make sense to give the best baseball playing areas more spots.

Taiwan takign a 6:1 lead over mexico now... this defeat would seriously hurt Mexico's chances.. who also lost to Canada yesterday.
