The Griddle NCAA Tournament contest returns (the drive for 100!)
2008-03-19 13:30
by Bob Timmermann

For the second straight year, an eternity for most people, I will be hosting an NCAA Tournament contest here on the Griddle through Yahoo! The group will be called "The Griddle" and will be group #38980 and the password to join will be "griddle". I like simplicity.

There will be prizes, including:

Having your name on the sidebar (unless it's something obscene or profane) until the next tournament. Right now, last year's champ Suffering Bruin has his name on the sidebar. Suffering Bruin's key to victory last year, of course, was picking UCLA to lose to Florida. Remember, pick winners with your head, not your heart.

Also, you can win a copy of Sayonara Home Run! : The Art of the Japanese Baseball Card by John Gall and Gary Engel.

I'll bump up this thread as we get closer to the start of the tournament next Thursday.

Added prize! The winner can also opt to receive an OFFICIAL Pac-10 Tournament Oregon State t-shirt, XXL only. You may cover over the k and t in basketball if you wish.

The server will likely be busy the first few hours. But you have until right before the first game tips off Thursday morning to fill out a bracket.

UPDATE - There are 66 entries in the contest as of 1:30 pm today. There were over 100 last year and it came down to the final game. Time to go find your favorite algorithm to pick winners. Is there wisdom in crowds? What counts for more: RPI, SOS, W-L?

UPDATE 2 - There are 78 entries as of 7:30. Let's make it 100! That way if you have a C in your name, you can make it a different color.

I get an erro message that I'm not a member of the group when I click on the link. Am I too soon?

I think you need to log in as a Yahoo user first I believe.

Even if you're logged in, you still get that message.

What you need to do is direct people to the Pick 'Em main page rather than the Griddle group page. They'll need to know your group number as well as the password. (The group number is 38980, which I was able to figure out because it's embedded in the URL you posted above.)

I'll be sure to post an entry, just so you can have at least one bracket with USC going way too far.

Since my alma mater (St. John's) hasn't even sniffed the NCAAs in a few years, I'm hereby throwing out my rooting interest to any teams rooted for by Griddlers.

Make a case why I should root for YOUR team.

Let me tell y'all something. You can have your t-shirts and your books. The real prize is seeing the moniker on the sidebar. That's fun.

The last time I went to an NCAA tournament game in person, St. John's was playing in one of the two games and they were a #1 seed.

My school wasn't good enough to get into the NCAA tournament. Is there an NIT contest that I can join? Good luck to UCLA, Stanford, Wazzu, USC (begrudgingly) and Oregon in the tournament. To the Pac 10 school who got in with a losing conference and done. I'm not bitter at all.

Arizona State got a #1 seed in the NIT, along with Virginia Tech, Syracuse, and Ohio State. Cal got a bid to the NIT with a 16-15 record.

I haven't found the CBI field yet.

Maybe CSUN will get into the CBI since they got shafted by the NIT committe.

Cincinnati has accepted a CBI bid with a 13-18 record. Brown and UTEP are going as well.

Bob, I trust that I can count on you to root for George Mason with me, at least in the first round.

I will root for George Mason, but I don't think they'll win.

I have submitted my entry.

I spent exactly seventy-five seconds making my choices, so I expect to go far.

I look forward to fitting myself, my bride, and my spawn, all at the same time, into the Oregon State XXL T-Shirt. There should also be enough room inside the shirt to knit something, or perhaps put a kettle on for tea. I am very small and my spawn is even smaller.

Okay Bob, I'm in! My bracket name is "The Prince of Hoops" A pun on my last name. We shall see how it goes. I was pretty conservative, 3 #1 seeds and 1 #2 in the final 4.
